Anambra Government Bans Writing Assignments in Textbooks to Promote Reuse and Reduce Costs

The Anambra State Government has officially banned pupils and students from writing assignments directly inside textbooks, describing the practice as wasteful and unsustainable.
The directive was announced by the State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, on Thursday during a capacity-building workshop for private school proprietors and teachers held at St. John of God Secondary School, Awka.
According to her, the new policy is designed to make textbooks reusable, especially for younger siblings who may need them when they advance to the next class. She added that textbooks should also reflect inclusivity, equality, and the diverse needs of all learners.
Prof. Chuma-Udeh emphasized that the state government would not tolerate non-compliance with the directive and called on parents, teachers, and school administrators to enforce it strictly. She also urged stakeholders to report any cases of defaulting schools to the Ministry of Education.
She explained that the initiative is part of Governor Charles Soludo’s administration’s broader strategy to reduce the financial burden on families while promoting sustainable and quality education across the state.
