Amnesty International has urged the Nigerian government to swiftly investigate a fresh wave of violence in Plateau State that left at least 15 people dead.
According to the rights group, armed attackers stormed several villages in Chakfem District, Mangu Local Government Area, on Monday evening. The affected communities include Tim, Koppang, Mihidihin, Jiblang, Jilem, Jibin, and Manden.
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen killed residents on sight, razed homes, and destroyed properties, forcing over 200 villagers to flee for safety.
Amnesty International described the killings as another reminder of the vulnerability of rural communities in Plateau State, accusing Nigerian authorities of failing to protect citizens from “rampaging gunmen.”
“Failure to stop these attacks is costing people their lives and livelihoods. Without urgent government intervention, many more lives may be lost,” the group warned.
The organisation highlighted that between December 2023 and February 2024, at least 1,336 people were killed in Plateau State, including 533 women and 263 children. Within the same period, 29,554 residents were displaced.
Just last April, a separate attack in Bassa Local Government Area claimed at least 51 lives, further fueling concerns over the worsening insecurity in the state.
