The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspected fake doctor, identified as Sunday Okon Akpan, for allegedly carrying out an illegal abortion that resulted in the death of a young woman.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the suspect was apprehended at Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odong village, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, where he operated without a valid medical license.

The arrest followed a report by the mother of the victim, Blessing Sunday Etim, who disclosed that her daughter had gone to work at the facility but never returned. A co-tenant later alleged that the suspect attempted to secretly dump the victim’s body in her room but fled after being confronted.

When detectives arrived, they reportedly found a premature foetus emerging from the deceased’s body, confirming suspicions of a botched abortion.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim died from complications of an illegal abortion performed by the suspect. Further findings exposed that he is neither a licensed doctor nor a nurse, but a community health practitioner who operated the facility to carry out illegal medical services and abortions,” DSP John said.

The police spokesperson added that the health centre has since been deserted. The body of the deceased has been deposited at a morgue for preservation and autopsy, while investigations continue.
