Aisha Buhari Allegedly Divorced Late President Before His Death — Prof. Farooq Kperogi Claims

Farooq Kperogi, a Nigerian-American professor of journalism at Kennesaw State University, has alleged that Aisha Buhari was no longer married to former President Muhammadu Buhari before his death.

In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Kperogi claimed that Aisha Buhari had quietly separated from the late president and reverted to her maiden name, Aisha Halilu, long before his passing.

According to Kperogi, Aisha had allegedly distanced herself from Buhari during the final years of his life, showing little willingness to accompany him to the United Kingdom for medical treatment during his period of critical illness.

The professor made the claims while responding to recent reports quoting Aisha as saying that the late Buhari had urged her to seek forgiveness from Nigerians on his behalf before his death. Kperogi questioned the authenticity of that statement and insisted their marriage had ended prior to his passing.

He wrote:

“They had divorced, and Aisha reverted to her maiden name, Aisha Halilu. If you paid close attention, you would have noticed the shift. She was no longer publicly referred to as Aisha Buhari.”

Kperogi’s claim has stirred debate on social media, though no official statement has been released by the family or relevant authorities to confirm or deny the allegation.
