Morocco began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) journey with a convincing 2–0 victory against Comoros in the tournament opener on Sunday at Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The Atlas Lions struggled to convert their dominance in the first half, with Soufiane Rahimi’s penalty saved, leaving the scoreline goalless at halftime in a rain-soaked encounter.
The breakthrough came 10 minutes into the second half when Real Madrid midfielder Brahim Díaz scored from close range, igniting celebrations among the 60,180-strong crowd. The match then saw moments of drama at both ends, with Comoros forward Rafiki Saïd denied by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, and Noussair Mazraoui forcing a fine stop from Comoros keeper Yannick Pandor.
Morocco put the result beyond doubt 15 minutes from time when substitute Ayoub El Kaabi produced a stunning overhead kick, ensuring a confident start for Walid Regragui’s side despite the wet and cold conditions in the Moroccan capital.
The Atlas Lions will face Mali in their next group stage match on Friday, while Mali will open their campaign against Zambia in Casablanca on Monday.
Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi remained on the bench for the entire game, with coach Regragui opting to rest the Paris Saint-Germain full-back as he continues recovery from an ankle injury sustained in early November.
