AFCON 2025: Lookman’s Late Strike Seals 2–1 Win for Super Eagles Against Tanzania

Story: written by Uzuh Rita December 24,2025 in emerged as Nigeria’s hero after scoring the match-winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Tanzania in the Super Eagles’ opening fixture at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria, tipped as clear favourites, controlled much of the early proceedings and pressed relentlessly for an opener. Their dominance eventually paid off when defender Semi Ajayi broke the deadlock.

The goal came after a corner kick was partially cleared, allowing Alex Iwobi to swing the ball back into the box, where Ajayi rose highest to nod it into the net.

Tanzania responded with an equaliser when Charles M’Mombwa was left unmarked inside the penalty area and calmly slotted home.

However, the Super Eagles wasted little time reclaiming the lead. Just two minutes later, Lookman showed composure inside the box, taking a couple of touches before firing a left-footed finish past the goalkeeper to restore Nigeria’s advantage.

The goal proved decisive, handing Nigeria a winning start to their AFCON 2025 campaign.
