At least 12 people lost their lives in a devastating multi-vehicle collision on the Yangoji–Abaji corridor of Abuja on Sunday, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.

FCT Sector Commander Felix Theman reported that the crash occurred around 11:45 a.m. at Gada Biyu, with the first distress call received just two minutes later. A Zebra 6 Unit patrol team reached the scene within seven minutes.

Four vehicles were involved: two Volkswagen Golfs (GWA 162 KZ and ABJ 111 NW), a Ford Sharon bus (AFN 325 YL), and a Volvo Randon trailer (ANC 665 XA). Preliminary investigations indicate that speeding and loss of control triggered the chain collision.

The trailer, owned by African Natural Resources and Mines Ltd and transporting coal from Gujeni in Kagarko LGA, Kaduna, reportedly lost control and crashed into an illegal roadside motor park, sparking the fatal incident.

Casualties included 8 adult males, 4 adult females, 2 male children, and 4 female children, bringing the death toll to 12. Three others—two men and a woman—sustained injuries, while three escaped unharmed.

FRSC officers administered first aid, secured belongings from the vehicles, and evacuated the injured to Abaji General Hospital, while the deceased were handed over to their families for burial according to cultural and religious practices.

The Kwali Division Motor Traffic Police has taken over the investigation to determine other factors that contributed to the crash.
