The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that the explosion reported in Abuja on Monday afternoon was an attempted suicide bombing targeting the Mogadishu Army Cantonment, located along the Mararaba-Nyanya expressway.

According to NEMA, the blast occurred when a lone attacker wearing an improvised explosive device (IED) attempted to breach security at the military barracks. The device detonated prematurely, killing the suicide bomber instantly and injuring a civilian passerby.

Authorities were alerted to the explosion at approximately 1:47 p.m. NEMA immediately activated a multi-agency emergency response team. The injured civilian was promptly evacuated by the Nigeria Police Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit and transported to the National Hospital, Abuja, for urgent medical attention.

The Nigerian Army and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Police Force have both confirmed the explosion, noting that investigations are ongoing. Forensic specialists have been deployed to the scene to gather evidence.

A joint security operation involving NEMA, the Military, the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officially concluded the emergency response at 5:29 p.m.

In a statement released on Tuesday, NEMA said: “Preliminary findings indicate that the suicide bomber attempted unauthorized access to the Mogadishu Barracks when the IED exploded.”

The swift coordination among national security and emergency agencies helped prevent what could have been a major tragedy in Nigeria’s capital
