A motorist (name withheld) has recounted his harrowing experience at the hands of officers from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command in Abuja, who allegedly assaulted and extorted N350,000 from him under the pretext of enforcing third-party insurance compliance.
Speaking to SaharaReporters, the victim explained that he was stopped on Arab Road by policemen from the Kubwa Phase 4 Police Station. Despite presenting his valid vehicle documents, the officers reportedly refused to check them and instead insisted he follow them to the station.
“At the station, they treated me like a criminal,” he said. “They never told me what my offence was but tried to detain me immediately.”
The motorist revealed that the officers initially demanded a sum of N1.5 million but later agreed to collect N650,000. Under duress, he was forced to transfer N350,000 through a POS agent identified as Joshua Ayokunle Agboola, who operates within the premises of the Kubwa Area Command/Division.
“The officers called a POS lady outside the station, and I was made to transfer N350,000,” he continued. “They told me to bring the balance on Monday.”
This incident adds to the growing list of police misconduct cases in Nigeria, where officers have been repeatedly accused of using their positions to extort innocent citizens. The victim is now calling on the authorities to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Efforts to get a response from the FCT police command were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
