A passenger train traveling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed on Tuesday morning, forcing several coaches off the tracks and sending passengers scrambling for safety.
The incident occurred shortly after the train departed Abuja around 11 a.m., along the busy corridor that connects the Federal Capital Territory to Kaduna State. Eyewitnesses said the derailment was sudden and caused widespread panic.
“It was complete pandemonium. The coaches went off track without warning. People were screaming and rushing out in all directions. We pray there are no casualties,” one passenger recounted.
Another eyewitness described the scene as “chaotic and frightening,” noting that passengers who escaped the derailed carriages fled into open spaces around the tracks.
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the accident, stating that emergency teams had been deployed.
“I can confirm that the derailment occurred, and rescue operations are ongoing,” Opeifa said, without giving further details.
As of press time, the cause of the derailment had not been determined, and officials were yet to release information on casualties or injuries.
The Abuja–Kaduna rail line is one of Nigeria’s busiest, transporting hundreds of commuters daily. However, it has faced multiple disruptions in recent years, including the March 2022 terrorist attack that left several passengers dead or abducted.
