The Ebem Ohafia community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State has banned the sale of cooking gas (LPG) in Ebem Market, citing safety concerns and the need to prevent potential disasters.
The decision was announced in a communique issued by the Ebem Ujurueze Palace, Ekeleugo Ebem, after an emergency meeting of the Council of Chiefs and Elders. The statement was jointly signed by the paramount ruler of the Ebem Ohafia Ancient Kingdom, Ezie Ukoha Kalu Ukoha, along with Emeka Mba (President General of EODU), Idika Kalu Uche, and Ifeanyi Okali, among others.
The leaders declared the ban outright, stressing that it was a preventive measure against possible loss of lives and property.
Crackdown on Crime and Social Vices
In the communique, the traditional rulers and elders also announced an immediate ban on cultism, gangsterism, and drug abuse in the community. Parents and guardians were urged to caution their children, while landlords whose properties are used for such illegal activities were instructed to evict offenders or face disciplinary action.
“Anyone found in unlawful possession of arms will be handed over to law enforcement agencies,” the communique stated.
Two-Week Ultimatum for Scrap Dealers
The Ebem Ohafia leaders further issued a two-week quit notice to all scrap dealers, warning of severe disciplinary measures for those who fail to comply.
According to security reports cited by the chiefs, a recent spike in vandalism and break-ins in the community has been linked to the activities of scrap dealers and their suppliers.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace, safety, and orderliness in Ebem Ohafia, warning that anyone found violating the directives would face strict enforcement actions.
