The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving access to quality healthcare, with the functionalisation of additional primary healthcare centres in Umuahia.

Speaking during the commissioning of the Nkwoegwu and Ogbodinibe primary healthcare centres, the State Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, said healthcare delivery remains a top priority of Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

He revealed that the governor inherited over 900 primary healthcare centres in poor condition, a situation that had endangered the lives of pregnant women and children. To address this, the government declared a state of emergency in the health sector and began rehabilitating and equipping facilities across the 17 local government areas of the state.

Professor Uche further disclosed that allocating 15% of the 2024 and 2025 state budgets to healthcare has already started yielding results, with more residents now accessing modern health services. He urged pregnant women to patronize government health facilities instead of traditional birth attendants, citing the lack of skills and equipment in such places.

Also speaking at the event, the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Obinna Aguocha, commended the state government’s efforts, noting that the centres would significantly improve the wellbeing of constituents and reduce maternal and child mortality.
