The governments of Abia and Imo States have inaugurated a joint security taskforce and enhanced surveillance along the Aba-Owerri expressway, covering the route from Owerrinta in Abia State to Owerri in Imo State.

The initiative comes in response to a series of recent attacks on the expressway, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and other criminal activities.

The launch was announced by Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Alex Otti. According to his statement:

“Following a strategic emergency security meeting on December 4, 2025, Governors Alex Otti and Hope Uzodinma resolved to establish a joint security taskforce comprising Soldiers, Naval personnel, Police officers, DSS agents, and other government security agencies.

Starting December 5, 2025, the taskforce will patrol the expressway 24/7, conducting extensive surveillance in surrounding areas using drones and other modern security technology.”

Governor Otti also praised the Imo State government for apprehending the criminals responsible for attacking his advance team and other passengers in recent days.

The two governors reassured motorists and travelers, particularly those returning home for Christmas, of their safety while warning that severe consequences await anyone caught engaging in criminal acts along the road.
