November 30,2022
The Human Rights Commission in Kano State says it has received 721 reports of rape from various parts of the state within nine months.
The head of the agency, Mallam Shehu told BBC Hausa that WARAKA Center, an agency that monitors victims of rape and other forms of violence against women, has assessed and followed up on cases of rape, hence, arriving at the latest statistics
Rape, a pressing challenge in Nigeria, has led to the abuse of many women, children and babies, in some cases. Many assume that lack of strict punishment for those found guilty of rape has contributed to its increase.
From January to September 2022, WARAKA confirmed that it had received more than 170 complaints of rape and other forms of violence against the female gender in the state
WikkiTimes gathered that the human rights commission in Kano has been working hand-in-hand with WARAKA for a long time as a member of the centre’s management committee.
In addition, Malam Shehu said that one-third of the complaints have been taken to the court, and some of the culprits have been prosecuted. However, the agency has presently put some plans in motion to support the victims, he said
