The apex Igbo socio-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that his continued detention remains a major concern for the Igbo people ahead of the 2027 political landscape.

Speaking during the Ohanaeze Imeobi and General Assembly held in Enugu, the group’s President-General, John Azuta-Mbata, stated that Kanu’s incarceration is symbolic of the broader grievances of the entire Igbo nation.

He warned the Federal Government against being misled by individuals claiming to guarantee electoral support from the region, stressing that meaningful political engagement must begin with Kanu’s release.

According to him, no true Igbo stakeholder is comfortable with the current situation, emphasizing that freedom for the IPOB leader is a fundamental demand of the people.

Beyond the call for Kanu’s release, Ohanaeze welcomed ongoing discussions around the creation of additional states, describing it as a positive step toward equity.

Mbata also decried the persistent stereotyping of Ndigbo and urged Igbos at home and in the diaspora to remain law-abiding and uphold the cultural values of their heritage wherever they reside.

He further stressed the importance of preserving the Igbo language and traditions, warning that the language faces gradual decline. To address this, the organization has initiated academic programs, including professorial endowments and scholarships, to promote Igbo studies in universities.

Additionally, plans are underway to introduce online learning platforms for Igbo children in the diaspora to reconnect with their linguistic roots.

The Ohanaeze leader concluded by urging Igbo political leaders to demonstrate courage, accountability, and visionary leadership, reminding them that history will ultimately judge their actions.
