The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has compared members who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Wike stated that his comparison was based on Obi’s conduct during the 2023 presidential race, where he contested under the Labour Party but allegedly failed to remain and address internal challenges within the party.

Speaking on Sunday at a national convention organized by his faction of the PDP, Wike argued that such actions reflect a lack of leadership qualities.

He said individuals who abandon their political platforms during crises demonstrate an inability to manage and resolve internal conflicts.

Wike further criticized Obi, noting that despite benefiting from the Labour Party’s platform during the election, he did not stay back to strengthen the party when it encountered difficulties.

Meanwhile, Wike’s faction proceeded with its convention despite an ongoing legal dispute at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. The case stems from a ruling by the Court of Appeal Nigeria which nullified the Oyo convention conducted by a rival faction led by Kabiru Turaki and supported by Governors Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde.

The FCT Minister also reiterated his stance that the PDP may not field a presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections, adding that the party could instead support the re-election bid of Bola Tinubu, who appointed him into office.
