Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has stated unequivocally that he will not serve as vice president to any presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.

Speculation had been rife that Amaechi might run as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is emerging as a leading contender for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket.

Speaking at an event in Abuja, Amaechi said he considers himself “too presidential” to play second fiddle.

“I will not be vice president to anybody. There are too many reasons why I won’t take that position. The first reason is simple: I’m too presidential to be vice,” he declared.

Amaechi, who is also vying for the ADC presidential ticket, criticised the structural limitations of the vice presidency in Nigeria. He argued that the office is inherently subordinate, largely dependent on the disposition of the president, and often lacks real power.

“Rather than be vice president and risk constant disagreements, I would prefer to serve as a minister than occupy a position that is largely ceremonial and powerless,” the former Rivers State governor added.
