The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that 171 associations have formally applied to be registered as new political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC revealed this in a statement issued on Thursday after its weekly meeting in Abuja, noting that 19 fresh letters of intent were recently submitted.

According to the electoral body, as of September 3, 2025, it had received a total of 171 letters of intent, and the full list has already been published on its official website.

The Commission explained that it is currently finalizing the shortlist of pre-qualified associations that may advance to the next stage of the registration process. However, it stressed that not all applicants have met the requirements for political party registration.

INEC further urged the associations to remain patient, assuring them that every application will be handled in line with the law.

“Some associations have even experienced setbacks due to internal leadership changes, defections to rival associations, or alignments with existing political parties, which have slowed down the process,” INEC noted.

The electoral umpire assured Nigerians that it will provide timely updates on every stage of the political party registration process as well as other activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
