Media mogul and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has claimed that opposition leaders including Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, and Peter Obi have strategically outmaneuvered President Bola Tinubu’s administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise programme on Friday, Momodu alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is unsettled by the emergence of a strong opposition coalition and is working to weaken rival parties to ensure Tinubu emerges as a consensus presidential candidate in 2027.

According to him, government agents have been attempting to destabilize major opposition platforms such as the Labour Party (LP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) by creating internal factions.

Momodu explained that ADC leaders foresaw these moves and deliberately misled the ruling party by creating the impression of aligning with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) or other platforms before formally unveiling ADC as the coalition vehicle.

“The ruling party is jittery. They don’t want strong competition in 2027. The gentlemen and leaders who worked on ADC are very experienced and exposed politicians, and they tightened all the screws to frustrate attempts to hijack the coalition,” Momodu said.

He further condemned what he described as attempts by the APC to suppress democracy through manipulation of INEC and the judiciary, urging judges to resist political pressure.

Momodu also criticised the PDP, saying the party has been plagued by internal crises and inertia, which has weakened its relevance in the opposition space.

The ADC chieftain warned that democracy is under threat if ruling party actors continue to undermine political competition, stressing that the resilience of the opposition remains vital to Nigeria’s democratic survival.
