The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly condemned the presidency for suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will remain in office until 2031, insisting that his current mandate expires in 2027 and re-election is not guaranteed.

The controversy began after former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, warned that Tinubu could attempt to extend his stay in power, comparing him to Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, who has ruled since 1982.

In response, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, dismissed el-Rufai’s remarks as “baseless,” stressing that Tinubu is a democrat and has no intention of remaining in power beyond May 28, 2031, provided he secures re-election in 2027.

Reacting in a statement, Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC’s spokesperson, described the presidency’s position as “presumptuous and undemocratic,” adding that re-election is not automatic.

“President Tinubu has not earned a second term. In just two years, his government has divided Nigeria like no other, worsened poverty levels, and failed to secure the nation,” Abdullahi said.

The opposition party accused Tinubu of presiding over widespread insecurity, claiming bandits and terrorists operate with freedom while rural communities are under siege.

On the economy, the ADC said Tinubu’s policies have weakened the naira, fueled inflation, and triggered massive job losses, leaving Nigerians “poorer, hungrier, and more frustrated” than before he took office.

The party also highlighted concerns over alleged human rights abuses, including disregard for court rulings, intimidation of journalists, and violence against protesters.

“Tinubu once presented himself as a democrat, but today his government operates with authoritarian tendencies, arrogance, and zero accountability,” Abdullahi added.

The ADC further criticized the administration’s financial management, pointing to secrecy in public spending, questionable loan deals, and persistent failure in the power sector despite huge investments.

Abdullahi concluded with a warning:

“Nigeria is not Lagos. In 2027, it will not just be APC versus ADC—it will be APC versus the Nigerian people.”
