2026 WCQ: Unuanel Backs Super Eagles To Overcome Qualification Struggles

Former Kwara United coach Samson Unuanel has urged Nigerian football fans not to give up on the Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup qualification hopes, despite the team’s recent struggles.

Nigeria played to a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe, a result that left the team six points behind group leaders South Africa. Victor Osimhen had put the Super Eagles ahead before Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa netted a late equalizer to salvage a point for the visitors.

Meanwhile, South Africa extended their lead at the top with a crucial 2-0 away victory over Benin, thanks to goals from Burnley’s Lyle Foster and Jayden Adams. With only four rounds remaining in the qualification series, Nigeria faces an uphill battle to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking with Completesports.com, Unuanel reminded fans that the Super Eagles have a history of overcoming challenging qualification scenarios, citing their dramatic turnaround in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

“I am not losing hope yet on the Super Eagles because we have been in this position in the past and still managed to qualify for the tournament,” Unuanel said. “Yes, many Nigerians will find it difficult to believe, but nothing is decided until the final games are played. Writing off the Eagles now won’t be ideal because there is still a chance for them to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.”

The veteran coach also dismissed concerns over the team’s recent form, insisting that the 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe should not be overanalyzed. “For all who care to hear, this result should not be seen as anything significant. All I know is that Nigeria will qualify,” he added.

The Super Eagles will need to put together a strong finish in their remaining fixtures to keep their World Cup dreams alive. With key games against South Africa, Benin, and other group rivals still ahead, the team’s destiny remains in their hands.
