At least 13 people have lost their lives following a tragic collapse at a mining site in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State. The incident occurred on Saturday, and Dr. Joshua Riti, Chairman of Bassa LGA, confirmed the fatalities on Monday, expressing sorrow over the heavy loss of life.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the collapsed site is situated at the borders of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs. Dr. Riti noted that seven of the deceased were residents of Bassa.

“This is an unfortunate incident,” he said. “These young people were simply seeking a means of livelihood. They put their efforts into productive work, aiming to survive amid the current economic challenges, only to meet with tragedy. My deepest condolences go out to the affected families and loved ones.”

Most of those who died were youths aged between 18 and 30, making the incident a particularly heartbreaking blow to the community.
