GTBank, Ecobank Raise SMS Alert Fees to ₦6 Effective May 1, 2025, Citing Telecom Tariff Hike

GTBank disclosed the adjustment in a customer notification on Wednesday, attributing the change to increased telecommunication charges recently implemented by service providers.
Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) and Ecobank Nigeria have announced an upward review of their SMS transaction alert charges, raising the fee from ₦4 and ₦5 respectively to ₦6 per message, effective Thursday, May 1, 2025.
“Dear Valued Customer,” the bank’s notice reads, “Please be informed that effective Thursday, May 1, 2025, the SMS transaction alert fee will increase from ₦4 to ₦6 per message. This adjustment is due to a recent increase in telecom rates as communicated by the telecommunication service providers.”
The bank emphasized that SMS transaction alerts are essential for monitoring account activity and safeguarding against unauthorized transactions. Customers who wish to opt out of SMS alerts can update their preferences by submitting a transaction alert form available on the bank’s website.
Similarly, Ecobank Nigeria has raised its SMS alert fee from ₦5 to ₦6, also effective May 1, 2025. The bank cited new telecom tariff structures as the reason for the adjustment, informing customers via direct SMS communication.
Both banks noted that the decision aligns with rising operational costs and inflationary pressures affecting the banking and telecommunications sectors.
