Nigeria could unlock over $830 million in investments within the next five years by transitioning from fossil fuel-based logistics to fully electrified containerised trade, according to APM Terminals, the country’s largest container terminal operator.
This was revealed in APM Terminals’ newly released Container Transport Electrification White Paper, presented to Vice President Kashim Shettima during the Decarbonizing Infrastructure in Nigeria Summit held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The high-level summit brought together stakeholders from the private sector, development finance institutions, and government to explore strategies for mobilizing climate finance and accelerating low-carbon infrastructure investment in Nigeria.
According to the white paper, embracing electrification in Nigeria’s port and logistics sector could:
- Unlock $830 million in investments by 2030
- Create thousands of green jobs
- Cut carbon emissions by 390,000 tonnes of CO₂e
- Improve public health and energy reliability
- Enhance the working environment for port staff and surrounding communities
“With over 40 ports globally already electrified—including in emerging economies like Kenya and India—Nigeria has a prime opportunity to leapfrog outdated, fossil-powered systems,” said Frederik Klinke, CEO of APM Terminals Nigeria.
Klinke added that electrification would not only enhance operational efficiency but also position Nigeria’s ports among the most advanced in the world.
“Our global experience shows that beyond cutting emissions, electrification improves the working environment, reduces both air and noise pollution, and delivers real benefits to local communities,” he emphasized.
The proposal aligns with Nigeria’s broader climate goals and the federal government’s drive for sustainable industrial transformation, as the country seeks to attract green investments and modernize key infrastructure.
Experts at the summit emphasized that Nigeria’s containerized trade sector holds enormous untapped potential, and electrification could serve as a game-changer in positioning the country as a leading logistics hub in West Africa.
