Nigeria’s newly appointed acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has pledged stronger security backing for the nation’s maritime space following talks with the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, in Abuja.
Disu said the Nigeria Police Force will deepen its role in protecting strategic economic sectors, particularly the maritime domain, through intelligence-driven operations, routine patrols, and tougher action against waterway crimes. He stressed his readiness to collaborate with ministries and agencies whose responsibilities align with national security and economic growth.
Oyetola emphasised the need for closer coordination to secure Nigeria’s coastal and inland waterways, noting that the maritime sector is key to economic diversification and job creation. He said ensuring safety across the waterways is essential to unlocking the sector’s full potential.
Both officials agreed to maintain regular engagement to enhance joint operations. The Marine Police Command and Port Authority Police remain central to securing ports, harbours, and inland waters, working alongside the Nigerian Navy to safeguard shipping and maritime trade.
