Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, a son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has formally left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring his intention to back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
The defection was announced on Thursday at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, where he was welcomed by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside key APC figures from the North-East.
Popularly known as Abba, he described the decision as a personal and defining moment in his political journey. He also called on members of his political network, the Haske Atiku Organisation, to follow his lead by joining the APC and supporting President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking at the event, Abba said he had decided to part ways with his former party, where he was active during the 2023 elections, in order to align with what he described as a new political direction.
He further stated that he would work closely with Senator Barau to mobilise support for President Tinubu’s second-term ambition, instructing coordinators of his organisation nationwide to move to the APC and contribute to the party’s success.
Welcoming him into the party, the APC National Vice Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, described the defection as significant, noting that it reflected confidence in the policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration.
Senator Barau also applauded the move, stressing that the decision was driven by conviction rather than family ties, and commended Abba for embracing the ideology and vision of the ruling party.
