Chelsea manager Frank Lampard prepared to sell midfielder to fund £65m signing

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is prepared to listen to offers for Jorginho in an effort to raise funds for a £65million raid on West Ham for Declan Rice. The Blues must sell to buy after splashing the cash on Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

Chelsea have made an explosive start to the summer transfer window by landing Ziyech and Werner, with Bayer Leverkusen attacking sensation Kai Havertz the next player on their hit list.

The deals have been funded by the profits from last year’s sale of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, and with the club eager to operate on a sound financial footing, they must start to raise funds as Lampard begins to turn his attention to strengthening his defence.

Chelsea conceded the most goals of any team in the Premier League top 10 and their soft underbelly was ruthlessly exposed by Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in Saturday’s FA Cup final.

Rice, who has operated in a holding-midfield role for West Ham but is likely to have a long-term career in central defence, has emerged as a major target for Lampard.

The Hammers value their academy graduate at £65m after a brilliant personal campaign that contacted sharply to the team’s struggles.

Manchester City-bound Nathan Ake and Atletico Madrid ace Jose Jimenez, who has a release clause in excess of £100, are also admired by Lampard.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Chelsea want to offload in defensive areas before a replacement is signed, which would mean selling either Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger or Andreas Christensen.

It is claimed an alternative would be to sell Jorginho, who Lampard is prepared to offload, so transfer fixer Marina Granovskaia will likely be tasked with finding a buyer.

The Italy international found himself out of favour after the Premier League restart and was only restored to the team when N’Golo Kante and Billy Gilmour were unavailable through injury.

A return to Serie A has been mooted, with Juventus boss Maurizio Sarri eager for a reunion.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville previously expressed his belief that Jorginho did not fit the squad that Lampard is trying to build.

“You have to think that he [Jorginho] is being managed out of Stamford Bridge,” the Manchester United legend said.

“I think it’s been clear from the moment Frank Lampard came in that he wants to build a young and hungry squad.

“Look at the way David Luiz was let go. With the way Jorginho has been dealt with, it’s quite clear where Lampard wants to take the team.

“When you think of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp over the last few years, they don’t veer away from the plan for any player.

“Frank Lampard has got a clear plan.”
