Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, alongside his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and one Hajia Bashir Asabe, are set to renew their bid for bail today, December 2, over alleged ₦9 billion corruption charges.

The trio, currently on remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre, will appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja to argue written bail applications following their arraignment on a 16-count money laundering charge.

Justice Emeka Nwite fixed today’s date after rejecting an earlier oral bail request during proceedings on Tuesday.

Malami and his co-defendants had pleaded not guilty to all the charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on behalf of the Federal Government.

Arguing earlier, defence counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, maintained that money laundering offences are bailable and that the defendants are entitled to bail, having been presumed innocent under the law.

However, EFCC counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, opposed the move, insisting that bail considerations under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) must be supported by affidavit evidence.

In his ruling, Justice Nwite directed both parties to return with properly filed written bail applications for determination.
