₦32bn Required to Supply Life-Saving Anti-Venom to Nigeria’s Primary Health Centres

Nigeria requires an estimated ₦32 billion to adequately stock Primary Health Centres (PHCs) nationwide with anti-venom, as concerns grow over snakebite deaths and limited access to emergency treatment in rural communities.
Health experts warn that many PHCs across Nigeria currently lack essential anti-venom drugs, leaving victims vulnerable to preventable complications and fatalities. The funding gap, they say, affects procurement, cold-chain storage, staff training, and distribution to hard-to-reach areas.
Public health advocates are calling for urgent government intervention and stronger partnerships with donors and the private sector to close the gap, noting that timely access to anti-venom at the grassroots level could significantly reduce mortality and long-term disability from snakebites.
